(NECN/WWAY: Wilmington, N.C.) - Traveling abroad can get expensive. To help cut the cost, some travelers are turning to couch surfing -- a free place to stay on a stranger's couch.

Travelers are using the Web site CouchSurfing.org to connect with others around the world as a host or couch surfer.

"Well, I stayed with prostitutes," Ashley Peel said of her trip to Australia. "That was an experience in it's own because since it was legal, it wasn't a taboo as much as it is in America."

(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Yarmouth, Maine) - A beloved resident of Yarmouth, Maine, was laid to rest today. The world-famous elm tree named "Herbie" was believed to be the largest and oldest elm in New England.

It's never easy to say goodbye to an old friend.

Donna Felker of Yarmouth grew up in the shade of Herbie's enormous arms. She was among the crowd watching as Herbie's arms, crippled by Dutch elm disease, were sawed off one by one.

Onlookers, many of whom had known Herbie all their lives, watched as arborists brought down the old tree.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The plug is being pulled on a radio navigational system that for decades was the preferred choice of mariners in waters off the U.S.

As low-cost GPS has emerged in recent years, the Department of Homeland Security says the LORAN-C system has become obsolete and is no longer needed for navigation or safety.

Over the protests of some U.S. senators and others who say the LORAN network should be maintained as a GPS backup, most of the nation's LORAN transmission towers will be turned off Feb. 8, with the remainder being shut down by Oct. 1.

(NECN/APTN) - The longest annular solar eclipse of the millennium began on Friday and travelled across several African countries before heading towards the Indian Ocean and eastern Asia.

In the Kenyan capital of Nairobi many residents gathered to watch this rare celestial phenomenon known as an annular eclipse - because it does not completely black out the sun.

Observers used sun filters and sheets of perspex to look at the eclipse as it was passing through the sky of their country. "It's like a miracle," said one of the observers.

(NECN: John Moroney, Medford, Mass.) - Haiti is a nation in crisis. The clock ticks as the world responds. With tens of thousands believed dead, the race is on to save those who remain.

It has become a project for a group of students in the Fletcher School at Tufts University.

Using social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter, the students have been mapping the disaster.

And now they are being threatened with extinction-- a number of species have contracted a disease that is causing massive die-offs.

Getting to the top of mount Aeolus in East Dorset Vermont, is never an easy feat. Especially in the dead of winter, when snow shoes are a must on this two mile uphill climb.
