Yesterday we had severe storms on the warm side of the storm, today we have cold wind on the cold side of the storm. Most of New England is dry this Mother’s day, but not northern Vermont. Here is an image from green and snowy, Westford Vermont at 11:30 AM this May 9, 2010. This Westford Weather Net cam is one of the many cams available through the National Weather Service Burlington Vermont.
While on the subject of May Snow in New England, do you remember what happened 33 years ago today?
Answer below.. but we would love to hear your story too.
I was in South Dennis, we had a half hour of sleet mixed with the rain.
But the highlands of the northeast got record late heavy snow, 20″ in Worcestor County.
NWS (then at Logan) Boston had the latest measurable snowfall on record.

Cloud top blow off, from more than 40 tornadoes spawned over the Mississippi River Valley since Friday, resulted in a gray start here in New England today, Sunday May 2, 2010. I went outside at 9:15 to check the sky.. no sun.. and did ‘they say’ it would rain today? Yes, I believe a few rain drops were mentioned in one of the forecasts. These cyclists were racing by, I could not resist the color coordination of the cycle suits and the fading daffodils and tulips. A gray multi layered sky was dripping just enough to “Freckle the Sidewalk” as David Majercik in Westhampton MA described. The cyclists seemed unfazed. This morning is the best time to get the sweat out, because the temperature is rising, and our dew point is rising to the 60s, making this the most humid day so far in 2010.
Our sky will brighten as sunshine burns through the alto cumulus, pushing temperatures to near record warmth. Most of the records to beat are from May 2, 2001.
We are likely falling just short of reaching these records..
Boston 91° 2001/1930 ——— Warwick RI 92° 2001 ——— Windsor Locks CT 93° 2001
Bridgeport CT 85° 2001 ——- Burlington VT 86° 2001 ——— Concord NH 91° 2001
Mt.Washington 58° 1936 ——– Bangor ME 90° 2001 ———- Caribou ME 83° 2001
Concord may get close, but for most of us, 2001, will not be beat 2010.
Severe storms and flooding continue to day from Louisiana to Ohio. A Deep trough from Hudson Bay south to Mexico features many surface lows, a 989 mb low over Montana with a surface trough to New Mexico is responsible for record cold and snow from California to New Mexico to Montana. The most snow I have seen is 48″ at Half Moon Pass MT. On the feast side of the upper trough we have a 999 mb surface low over James Bay with a surface front south to a 1000 mb low over Arkansas. Here on the east coast we have another unseasonably strong ridge, with a huge 1022 mb surface high from Cub to north of Bermuda. It’s This high amplitude flow causing the extreme weather these last few days (and much of the last few months). Here is the NOAA Surface Map.
In this set up we have to wait for major changes in the upper flow to get any significant change in our weather. That change will likely not occur until next weekend. During the transition will begin to experience more numerous thunderstorms, with continued much warmer than normal temperatures through this week.
We made it to Jay Peak the day after the 22″ Snowstorm, for the greatest latest snow in recent memory.

Greg Keeler, Director of Marketing for Cannon Mountain NH, could hardly sleep Friday Night. He was wondering if snow would still cover the race course set up for Bodefest 2010 at Cannon Mountain this past Saturday April 3, 2010. The temperature Friday hit 70°, with a forecast of sunshine and 80° for Saturday! Greg managed to sleep, and the snow held, the Cannon Crew spread 3300 pounds of sodium nitrate on the race course, upping the melting point of the surface, and saving the day. Bodefest 2010 was a great success. Bode Miller was first to race, with a time of a little over 33:20.
Here are some highlights, along with conditions at the 16 ski areas still open in New England.
This is final Lowdown for the season, check SnoCountry.com for conditions at areas like Killington, Wildcat, and Sugarloaf, thay may try to stay open a few more weeks. More photos below.
The big winners are all us in attendance Saturday, and the Miller family’s Turtle Ridge Foundation.
More photos at Cannon.com.
Mr. & Mrs SurfSkiWeatherMan had fun in the sun, and are happy to have met so many new friends at Cannon. It is also the first time Mr. SurfskiWeatherMan has snow skied in 80° weather. Bode wore a big smile at the finish, I do believe he got a kick out of seeing Mrs. Weatherman in the Tyrolean Hat.
If you saw the photo in the Boston Globe Monday, Bode was looking a little to the left, just as Janet snapped this photo. Here are a couple more shots.

“Hi Tim,
Great day for canoeing and kayaking through the picnic groves as the temperature under blue skies hit 51 at Lake Dennison in Baldwinville, MA today. Tim and Eric are seen enjoying much fun going through what once was a picnic grove.
Paul DeMeo”

Record high temperatures were recorded in Maine again today, 60° in Bangor beat 58° on March 16, 1927. High temperature records may continue as warmth spreads southward (again). Great drying weather is forecast for New England into Sunday. A low pressure system will cross far northern Maine Thursday with colder temps for Aroostsock County. But it looks like the next storm will really wind up to our west this weekend, meaning warmth right through Sunday. As Chicago digs out from a March snowfall this weekend, we may enjoy 70 degrees and sunshine*.
*The track of the next storm may change, if so.. our forecast will change.

New England has deep snow and plenty of sunshine, for the best skiing this side of Powder. There is hope for a continuation of this great weather into at least part of the weekend. And Maine may miss this the weekend rain altogether. Check this video of Cranmore, provided by Ski New Hampshire. Trails counts are highest, and snow pack deepest of the winter.
We reached 60° in New England today, the nicest weather since November 19-21, 2009.
And now, for the first time since January 12-14, 2010, we are not forecasting snow or rain in New England on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Oh What a Relief! Because many of the 7 mid-week storm forecasts have busted in one way or another. We shall relish the quiet… and retool for more fun beginning this weekend and beyond. The most interesting feature on the weather map today is the same thing as yesterday and the day before and the day before. The FOG over the Northern Plains. The fog shows up on the Visible Satellite Map.. seemingly every day. Here is the view this afternoon, Monday March 8, 2010.
That storm in Texas is a slow mover. The rain will arrive Friday, and may take the weekend to get by. Wind will increase from the east and southeast, perhaps to Gale Force by Saturday. Don;t cancel your weekend plan, but prepare for a rain delay, forecasts change all the time (for example, last Wednesday, I thought we would snow this Wednesday).
For more on the interesting Fog and Cold in North Dakota, see the Public Information Statements below. Why so much Fog? Submit possible explanation in comment section, also feel free to rib forecasters.

Mountain Wrecking Crew Productions scored first tracks on Castlerock at Sugarbush Vermont Saturday February 27, 2010. Bob and Nancy Hennessey report nothing but powder after SuperStorm 2010. How did they get first tracks of Weds-Fri Snow? We had wind hold Thursday and Friday.. leaving knee to waist deep pockets of snow. This weekend we get sunshine along with the deepest base depths of the winter.

Wednesday Evening March 3, 2010 Update..
Another bust.. Here is new thinking. The big deal is Coastal Flooding at High Tide around 2 AM. We may have similar flooding to what happened Midday Monday. The snow bands are there, but so far are falling apart as fast as they form. Reports from Cape Cod are 1″-2″, we may see enough for plowing by AM.
Updated map below.
We had some water on streets in Salem Massachusetts at High Tide Tuesday.
This photo from John Palmer along Commercial Street.
Also a view from the cam at Buzzard’s Bay where the snow was heavy late in the day.

Tuesday March 2 discussion..
Looking back through the weather Journal, the last time we had no mid-week storm was January 11-15. Although not all storms have met expectations of the forecast, they have been passing off our coast with head spinning frequency. And we have storms lined up for mid-week the next two weeks too. During the daylight Wednesday March 3, 2010 we should have snow falling and melting on our roads. But as soon as the sun goes down we will likely see roads becoming snow covered in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. And for the first time in months, we actually have colder air moving in from the north (instead of warmth), so maybe we can get this one right.
