All streaks have to end at some point. We are breaking a streak of great weekends today. The meteorological calendar summer is June, July, and August. So we made it through spring with record warmth and beauty. Now our first weekend of summer has flooding rain with powerful thunderstorms. Here is a map from National Center for Environmental Prediction Severe Storms Prediction Center. We are at risk for severe weather today and tomorrow. If you click on the NCEP SPC link, you will see lists of warnings. Click on warning to see where the strongest storms are. Click on storm reports to see where the most damage has occurred. Watch our radar to see when the storm is near you, and when it passes. The wettest part of the weekend is Saturday Morning and most of Sunday. That leaves Saturday evening and Sunday Night as potentially drier. But when added all up, we are getting 2″-5″ of rain in much of the region. Flooding and storm damage may be widespread.
Here in New England, we’ve seen our share of severe flood events in the last several years. Perhaps the most large-scale, high-impact event was in May of 2006, when up to 15 inches of rain fell in some communities. This time around, the rainfall totals will be less, but with no leaves on the trees and most ground vegetation still not growing, there is very little root uptake, meaning most of the rain will become runoff. Of course, after flooding rain of a couple of weeks ago, the ground is wet and the water table is high, so the only place for water to go is into the streams, ponds, lakes and rivers. These factors will combine to produce what may be the most significant flooding Central and Southern New England has seen in decades. Though the level of the water may be comparable to that of May 2006 along the Merrimack River (which means, if you were evacuated in May of ‘06 you should prep to evacuate again), the difference this time is that MANY rivers will be involved. Essentially, we’re urging all residents along or near rivers in Central and Southern New England to make preparations in case you’re told to evacuate as waters rise.
Here are some resources for your reference as the flood waters rise:

Simply amazing that we have a third storm merging with the upper low stalled over the northeast for 7 days now. The storm that tracked south of New Orleans Friday Feb 26, 2010, across southern FL Saturday, merged with our old Super Storm south of Nova Scotia today, Monday March 1, 2010. The resultant wind from the North ramped up to 50+ in gusts creating waves of 10′-20′ funneling to Massachusetts Bay. The combination of a weeks worth of onshore wind, Full Cold Moon High Tide, and wind from the right direction, brought the roughest seas to shores south of Boston since the April 2007 super storm. Here is the weather map for today. Some photos from the shore are posted below.
There is another storm with 3″ of snow in Dallam texas today. That low will bring another round of Gale Force wind to New England Wednesday. But the heavy precip should stay offshore. Believe it or not, Vermont may get the most in the next few days, from a storm passing way off to the south. Go Figure. About as logical as rain in Maine, and Snow on Cape Cod, that we saw today (another warm from the north due to block).
This 3 PM image from MoreBeach.com at Coast Guard Beach in Eastham MA shows the huge surf and snow that fell on Cape Cod today.
Mark Keup of Nor’Easter Surf Shop sent this photo from Brant Rock at Ocean Street in Marshfield Massachusetts at high tide today. None of us expected 15 breakers smashing over the Seawall at Noon today. The wind direction was just right (from North) to bring the huge seas to the beachfront usually protected by Cape Cod. But this swell came in from a 28.7″ storm center just at the right latitude to send the swell around the Cape. The fetch was from Nova Scotia to the south shore.
Did anyone go surfing? Mark Keup says, many tried:
“Phones been ringing off the hook with guys asking where to paddle out. Most guys said they tried to get out but couldn’t get past the white water, looking for a break that the waves are smaller. North shore spots also closed out because of the size.
Just saw one of the pics and caught the other on the web–mahalo for the plug. Roger
Beal surfed a secret spot this afternoon. Said it was as big as some of the points he would drive 3 hours for in Baja Mexico when he lived in La Jolla. Solid 15′ faces would roll and and he said he would be scratching for the horizon. Got a little sketchy–he said 3 waves and he was done for the day. No one else out.
Rogers is the only confirmed ridden wave so far down here. And still looking big for most of the week with the next low!!!
aloha,
mark
nor’easter”
mahalo right back at ya Mark. Here is another plug, see Nor’Easter SurfShop Daily online Report here.
This is Mark’s State of The Surf Report today.

BIG AND NASTY–OVERHEAD++
LOW PRESSURE 200 MILES EAST OF CAPE COD SENDING SOME JUICY SWELL BUT THE LOCAL WINDS ARE TRASHING IT AT THE BEACHES. NNW WINDS 20-30, WATER 39 DEGREES, LOW TIDE 5:36PM. HUNT DOWN A SHELTERED SPOT. CLOUDY,DRIZZLE AND 40 ON THE COAST.
How about ski conditions?
Greg Keeler sends this photo and comment from Cannon Mountain today. Cannon missed the big snow AND RAIN of last week, but has been snowing non stop since.
The 2 weathermen here Saturday seem to have left some good weather vibe here and we got ONE FOOT last night and today! That gets Cannon to about 27″ since the rain? indeed…we have it as 29″
Greg
Sugarloaf is past 60″ in a week. Skiing is the best of the year this week. A few more inches likely the next few days. Hunter Mountain in New York has 84″ in 6 days, the most form one storm in decades.
Out of time again.

DOODY
A strong storm has moved across the Great Lakes, and the intense counter-clockwise flow of air around its core has driven deep warmth and moisture northward up the Eastern Seaboard. The change in air was evident early Monday morning, as temperatures rose rapidly into the 50s, with Boston’s Logan Airport recording a 12 degree temperature jump in just one hour from 4 AM to 5 AM! This warmth comes with deep moisture direct from the Gulf of Mexico…
…and we’ve loaded the New England atmosphere with just about as much moisture as you’re going to see this time of the year, so it will rain quite heavily throughout the day, with total rainfall amounts between one and three inches. Highest rainfall totals will be found from the White Mountains to the Mahoosucs Range of Maine, where a south and southeast wind pushing against the mountain faces will enhance cloud development. So much rain, coupled with snowmelt, means imminent street flooding and stream flooding, regionwide. In some smaller rivers of Central and Northern New England – especially the Swift, Pemigewasset and Saco, ice jams are possible as ice breaks up, flows downstream, and may become lodged on bridges or at narrow passages, allowing water to quickly back up behind the jam. Basement flooding is not as likely because the frost depth, according to reliable weather observers, is about eight inches, so water will readily run off the soil, not into it. Those with flood-prone basements know the most common scenario is for the ground water table to rise, which can’t happen if the water can’t penetrate the ground.
Of course, transporting all of this warmth and moisture northward is wind. You can’t very well get 50s or lower 60s in New England in January without a lot of moving air, and there are indications that this air will move at over 100 mph just 6000 feet off the ground by later Monday afternoon. While we don’t expect those kinds of wind speeds to reach the ground, the atmosphere will be more freely mixed where warmer air has arrived, meaning strong wind gusts of over 55 mph are likely. Damage has already been done to our south, across the Mid-Atlantic, where 30,000 people were out of power as of Midday in Southern New Jersey as a line of damaging thunderstorms continued to rip through that location. Meanwhile, winds ripped a scaffolding from a building in Northern New Jersey, and sent a tree limb crashing upon a pedestrian. These damaging winds will sweep from west to east across New England from Monday morning through afternoon, respectively, with the most vulnerable areas found on the western slopes of the Green Mountains in Vermont, the South Coast and Southern New England away from deep snowpack (snow is cold, and stabilizes the air), and a swath of Eastern New England from Eastern MA through the Maine Coast. Downed tree limbs and power lines in these locations will lead to power outages, and similar problems to our friends in the Mid-Atlantic are possible.
The evening commute will be very difficult for most commuters with the combination of heavy rain, snowmelt and gusty wind. After dinner, rain and wind will taper, and cooler, drier air will slowly settle across New England on a steady but not damaging wind overnight. A few patches of black ice are likely Tuesday morning, before breaks of sun team with lots of clouds and a few snow showers as colder air continues moving in. By Thursday, another disturbance will bring increasing clouds and areas of snow, probably mixed with rain in Southern New England. This actually was the day that, last week, we thought would be quite cold, but that cold shot has been delayed 24 hours, meaning Friday now appears to be the beginning of the deep cold that will last into the upcoming weekend.
Any snowstorm threats? One disturbance passes south of New England this coming Saturday and may throw snow onto at least Southern New England, and a stronger, more moist disturbance makes another pass around the middle of next week.
Stay dry!

Our Friday looks fairly quiet with mostly light snow (some rain at he shore). The snow picks up Friday Night, especially in Maine. The the storm way out at sea begins to intensify and back to the northwest, and eventually southwest. Some of the computer models deepen this storm to 962 millibars, that is stronger than Hurricane Bob in Rhode Island August 19, 1991 (Bob was 964 millibars). Though this extreme is not likely, it is within the realm of possibility..

Blizzard conditions are likely in Maine by Saturday afternoon. As for the rest of New England, we may see near blizzard conditions at the coast in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The worst of this storm looks to be Saturday and Saturday Night. Here is the latest forecast for the track of this long duration storm. We are still forecasting a ‘Blizzard Loop’ as discussed in the Monday Post.
Here is our latest guess at amounts.

High tides Noon Saturday and Midnight Saturday Night may bring moderate coast flooding to The Maine Mid-Coast and points east, also along north facing shores of Cape Ann and Cape Cod Massachusetts..
Coastal Flood Warning for Maine, This statement is from The National Weather Service Office in Gray:
THE ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDE IN PORTLAND HARBOR WILL BE 11.5 FEET
JUST BEFORE NOONTIME ON SATURDAY. THE OCEAN STORM AND BUILDING
WAVES ARE EXPECTED TO BRING A STORM SURGE BETWEEN 1.0 AND 1.5 FEET
TO THE REGION. THIS WOULD BRING A STORM TIDE BETWEEN 12.5 AND 13.0
FEET TO PORTLAND. A STORM TIDE IN THIS RANGE WOULD BE CONSIDERED
IN THE TOP 20 TIDES EVER REPORTED FOR THE FOREST CITY AND WOULD
CAUSE FLOODING OF COMMERCIAL STREET AND NEARBY PIERS. SOME LOW
LYING ROADWAYS ALONG THE BEACHES OR MARSHES FROM PORTLAND TO
HAMPTON WOULD BE TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING.
ANOTHER HIGH TIDE EARLY SUNDAY AFTERNOON WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED
AS WELL. WINDS MAY BECOME NORTHWESTERLY LATE IN THE WEEKEND WHICH
COULD LESSON THE STORM SURGE. HOWEVER…WAVES WILL BE CONTINUING
TO BUILD AT THE SAME TIME AS THE STORM REACHES ITS CLOSEST
APPROACH TO OUR COASTLINE. VERY LOW PRESSURE WITHIN THIS STORM MAY
BE AN ADDED COMPONENT TO THE STORM SURGE.
Great post by Matt below. This situation reminds me a bit of Ophelia in September 2005. While we all stared at Ophelia meandering around the Carolina’s, a band of tropical downpours set up with flooding rain for New England. Bill is a huge scary storm, but we are more likely to have evacuations in Vermont due to flooding, than near our coastline. Outside of 10′-20′ Ground Swells, Bill (like Ophelia) may be a non-story for New England. The National Hurricane Center Bill Forecast is below along with the Track of Ophelia.

This image from Berkshires.org web cam at Jiminy Peak in Hancock Massachusetts shows the deep puddles from 3″ of rain this afternoon.
We’ve been talking about the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms, and the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of western Connecticut, western Massachusetts and southern VT was in effect until 8 pm. Now we have non-severe flooding thunderstorms click here to view the warnings that are currently in effect.
