(NECN: Anya Huneke: Burlington, VT) - Giving the gift of life, one pint at a time. NECN and the Red Cross are teaming up once again this year for a New England wide "Celebrate the Gift of Life Blood Drive".

NECN's Anya Huneke visited a blood drive in Burlington, Vermont.

Don Fleming has been in this chair.

He began donating blood to the American Red Cross back in the 1980s because he knew someone - somewhere - needed it. Then, a few years ago, the need became personal. His son - now 28, was diagnosed with cancer.

NECN's Latoyia Edwards spoke with Jeff Jarvis, who is donating platelets. Platelets are very important because they clot the blood, and are used especially in accident victims, and cancer patients. Jarvis says it is a very comfortable experience, and it lasts about two hours.

FDA announces recall of 2M defective needles

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal health officials are announcing a recall of 2 million needles because of a risk they can push bits of silicone into patients' bodies.

The Food and Drug Administration said Miami-based Nipro Medical Corp. has voluntarily recalled its Exel/Exelint Huber needles manufactured between January 2007 and August 2009.

The needles are used to access injection ports, which are implanted under the skin of patients with chronic diseases who require frequent drug injections.

Blood donations helped save seven-year-old Neve Cawley's life.

When Neve was just four, she received a diagnosis that every parent dreads -- she had acute lymphocytic leukemia, and saving her life would require an aggressive regimen of chemotherapy and steroids, followed by two years of maintenance chemotherapy.

WHO slams swine flu critics as ‘irresponsible’

GENEVA (AP) - The World Health Organization has rejected as "irresponsible" allegations that swine flu is a fake pandemic.

WHO also dismissed claims it colluded with drug companies to bring economic benefit to the industry by playing up the danger of the new H1N1 influenza strain.

WHO officials will meet with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on Tuesday after the watchdog body questioned whether the U.N.'s health agency acted under undue influence.

Daniele International Inc. recalls 1.2M pounds of salami

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island meat company is recalling 1.2 million pounds of pepper-coated salami due to concerns about salmonella contamination.

The recall Saturday by Daniele International Inc. comes amid an investigation of a salmonella outbreak that's sickened 184 people in 38 states since July.

The Burrillville company says 11 people who got sick had eaten salami from the Daniele Italian Brand Gourmet Pack.

Mass. doctors ship out to help in Haiti

Today, a group of Massachusetts physicians found a way around the backlog. They are flying north of Haiti's capital city, and they are bringing $1 million worth of medical equipment with them.

Brandi and Kayla are worried sick about their mother's safety. A 6.1-magnitude aftershock struck Haiti on the same day that their mom goes on a medical mission to the earthquake-ravaged country.

No students were involved in the incident. School officials are now trying to figure out how this happened.

Schofield Elementary School nurse Susan Marston is on paid administrative leave after some school staff members who signed up for the H1N1 vaccine were mistakenly given shots of insulin.

Pelosi: Congress will pass health overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says that Congress will soon produce a health overhaul bill, regardless of who wins the Massachusetts special Senate election.

The California Democrat told reporters Tuesday that "our eye is on the ball of passing legislation." She said that the House, Senate and White House are continuing to narrow their differences and work toward a compromise.

She says the country will get "affordable health care for all Americans" no matter what happens in Massachusetts.

Johnson & Johnson expands Tylenol recall

NEW YORK (AP) - Johnson & Johnson is again expanding a recall of Tylenol caplets due to a moldy smell that made some users sick. The company says the problem also affects some lots of its fever and pain drug Motrin.

The company's McNeil Consumer Healthcare Products business said the voluntarily recall applies to some batches of Tylenol caplets, geltabs, arthritis treatments, rapid release, and extended relief Tylenol, as well as Motrin IB, chewable extra strength Rolaids, Benadryl allergy tablets, and St. Joseph aspirin.

Study: Sleeping in no help for chronic sleep loss

(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - Those who regularly lose sleep may find nothing more than a false sense of security by sleeping in on the weekend.

Researchers at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital say those who chronically lose sleep can not make up for it.

They found people who sleep less than six hours per night and then slept in for one day only felt better after first waking up. As the day wore on, their reaction times steadily got slower and they were more prone to mistakes.

Red Cross out of medical supplies in Haiti

WASHINGTON (AP) - A spokesman for the American Red Cross says the aid organization has run out of medical supplies in Haiti.

Red Cross spokesman Eric Porterfield said Wednesday that the small amount of medical equipment and medical supplies that were available in Haiti has been distributed.

The Red Cross is sending more medical supplies to Haiti, but Porterfield says he does not know when they will arrive.

Porterfield says he doesn't know if the depletion of medical supplies is preventing victims in critical condition from being treated.

Report: Drug use on the rise among elderly

Study: Cell phone-use could help Alzheimer’s patients

But this week the journal of Alzheimer’s disease is publishing a new study that says electro-magnetic waves from cell phones could actually help Alzheimer’s patients.

Massachusetts-based Alzheimer’s expert doctor Michael Biber is one of many physicians examining an eye-opening University of South Florida study. The 9-month experiment investigated the effects of two-hours of daily cell phone radiation exposure on 96 mice.

MGH expansion planned

(NECN) - Expansion is planned at Massachusetts General Hospital, where a new, 500,000 square foot health care facility will be built on the Boston campus.

Plans include an expanded oncology department, new emergency services and new operating suites.

The money for all this is coming from a $500 million bond, which will also help Partners Health Care refinance $425 million in debt.

Study: Single life is the slim life

(NECN) - Researchers followed about 6,500 hundred women in Australia over ten years, and came out of their study with the theory that staying single may help one stay slim.

The study found those who got married or lived with a partner gained an average of four pounds more than those who stayed single. And that women who gave birth to a child gained an average of nine pounds more.

WPI receives federal funding for neuroprosthetics center

Students there are working on developing technology that will advance prosthetic limbs.

Neck manipulation is a common procedure practiced by chiropractors. They say it relieves symptoms and increases mobility. Some patients, though, say it's dangerous.

CDC: Same anthrax strain in drums, sick NH woman

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Medical investigators have confirmed that the strain of anthrax that sickened a New Hampshire woman is the same strain found on an electrical outlet and two drums used at a gathering she attended earlier this month.

Dr. Elizabeth Talbot, an adviser to the state Department of Health and Human Services, said the test results received Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention bolster the theory that the woman swallowed airborne anthrax spores during a Dec. 4 drum circle performance at the United Campus Ministry center in Durham.

CDC: Fewer states seeing widespread swine flu

ATLANTA (AP) - Health officials say swine flu was widespread in only four states last week, indicating the fall wave of illness is still declining.

Swine flu was widespread in seven states the previous week. Reported infections have been dropping since a peak in late October, when 48 states reported high levels of sickness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the new data Thursday. The four states are Delaware, Maine, New Jersey and Virginia.

Worcester sees surplus in H1N1 vaccine

A Christmas miracle: Mother, baby revived during birth

His was supposed to be a routine birth. Tracey Hermanstorfer's water broke on Christmas Eve, so she arrived with her husband at a Colorado Springs hospital to deliver the couple's third son. Then something went terribly wrong.

Research: No evidence that Ginkgo supplements slow rate of mental decline

(NECN/ABC) - Results from a large clinical trial show that long-term use of the herbal supplement Ginkgo biloba does not slow the rate of mental decline in older adults.

Ginkgo biloba is among the best-selling herbal supplements in the U.S.

Ginkgo is used in traditional Chinese medicine to enhance circulation, improve memory, and prevent mental impairment due to aging or dementia.

However, until now, strong clinical evidence about its effects on mental decline in the elderly has been lacking.

Tylenol Arthritis Caplet voluntary recall expanded

NEW YORK (AP) - Johnson & Johnson is expanding a voluntary recall of Tylenol Arthritis Caplets due to consumer reports of a moldy smell associated with nausea and stomach pain.

The New Brunswick, N.J., company says it is now recalling all product lots of the Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count bottles with the red EZ-Open Cap.

Johnson & Johnson had recalled five lots of the product last month.

To date, the side effects, which also include vomiting and diarrhea, have been "temporary and non-serious."

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force says most women don't need mammograms in their 40s, which contradicts the American Cancer Society.

A member of that task force is speaking out in defense of the new guidelines.
