Greg Keeler, Director of Marketing for Cannon Mountain NH, could hardly sleep Friday Night. He was wondering if snow would still cover the race course set up for Bodefest 2010 at Cannon Mountain this past Saturday April 3, 2010. The temperature Friday hit 70°, with a forecast of sunshine and 80° for Saturday! Greg managed to sleep, and the snow held, the Cannon Crew spread 3300 pounds of sodium nitrate on the race course, upping the melting point of the surface, and saving the day. Bodefest 2010 was a great success. Bode Miller was first to race, with a time of a little over 33:20.
Here are some highlights, along with conditions at the 16 ski areas still open in New England.

This is final Lowdown for the season, check SnoCountry.com for conditions at areas like Killington, Wildcat, and Sugarloaf, thay may try to stay open a few more weeks. More photos below.
The big winners are all us in attendance Saturday, and the Miller family’s Turtle Ridge Foundation.

The weather swings like a pendulum. As we swing warm, the Wasatch Range gets Blizzard! Here is first hand account from friends snowed in at Snowbird Utah today, April 6, 2010 (44″ last 48 hours 70 mph gusts).

“Thanks Tim! So much snow-but the resort is closed!!! Free lodging, lifts and rentals but can’t ski.

This morning at around 730-8am, I was looking out the window from the 7th floor of the cliff lodge when a huge avalanche came roaring down the mountain.

It took a car and flipped it over and moved it 150 feet down an embankment. The snow cloud reached above the 7th floor of the hotel.

We are restricted to the lodge and cannot even leave-they will arrest you if you are out wandering about.

We are ready to come home after being gone for 12 days…

See you soon..
Bob and Nancy Hennessey report nothing but powder after SuperStorm 2010. How did they get first tracks of Weds-Fri Snow? We had wind hold Thursday and Friday.. leaving knee to waist deep pockets of snow. This weekend we get sunshine along with the deepest base depths of the winter.

We have classic snow filled wind blowing in from Canada this morning, Friday February 19, 2010. North facing slopes from Bolton Valley to Balsams Wilderness are reporting 3″-8″ Fresh. This video from Mt.Sunapee has some of the totals from our Tuesday Storm.
We also have wind hold issues. Snow showers will continue on north facing slopes this weekend. On the sunny south facing slops from Mt.Snow to Waterville Valley to Sunday River. Either way, the temperatures are coming up and the wind is coming down. We have a little preview of Spring Skiing before the wintry weather (SNOW) returns by Tuesday and lasts into next weekend.

The United States leads the world in Medal Count in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. We have to brag about the number of Medal winning Olympians from New England. First to the podium was Hannah Kearny of Norwich Vermont, trains with Waterville Valley BBTS, got to the podium first in the Moguls on Saturday February 13. Also a Waterville Alum, Scotty Lago (Leggo), of Seabrook NH wins Bronze in snowboarding.
Bode Miller of Franconia New Hampshire won a Bronze in the Downhill Monday. He is still up for three more races, Super-G, Slalom, and Super Combined. How many medals will Bode win?

We are already psyched to race Bode when he comes home to Cannon, for the second annual Bodefest April 3, 2010.
Also on Monday February 15th, Seth Wescott came from behind to win Gold in Snowboardcross. Have you ever seen so many wipe outs in Boardercross?

Usulaly wipeouts in Boardercross happen when riders fight for position, this time riders were just wiping out without hitting each other! The snow appeared chunky monkey as the sun was setting and slush turned into ice cookies. So what does Seth do? he hangs back and lets the leaders wipe out, then he passes the last competitor as they raced to the finish, Outstanding! The party is on at Seth’s Home Town Pub, The Rack at Maine.
.

.
This place will be hopping from now until Reggea Fest on April 15-18, 2010. Hopefully this SurfSkiWeatherMan will make an appearance at as many of these New England Hometown Hoedowns as Possible.
.

Do you have a favorite New England competitor in the Olympics? Leave us a comment, send us a link. The Fun has just begun! And the weather is finally cooperating.

Hi Tim,
About 6″ of heavy wet snow in Gardner.
Ava Corso and her grandfather Norm Wironen took advantage of the heavy wet snow to make a snowman today in Gardner.
If you use it, at what time Tim?
(How is 4:20 PM for you Paul?)
Sun is shining now at 2:00.
Thanks,
Paul DeMeo
Before talking more about the weather has happened.. we should probably have a few words on the weather that is going to happen..

An upper low is crossing New England Tuesday into Wednesday. A new low will form over Cape Cod, with rain and snow breaking out through Tuesday. The hills of Western MA and most of VT & NH will likely See an inch or two of snow by Tuesday Evening. Temperatures are warm enough for rain (or snow that melts on contact) in the rest of southern new England. For Tuesday night, rain will change to snow before ending south, while in Maine the snow will become moderate to heavy. Another half a foot of snow is likely from Portland to Houlton by Weds AM.
Now back to our Monday system.. The max appears to be 15″ in Ossipee NH.

From about 10 last night 2 5AM in the morning we were stuck right on the Rain/Snow line. This lead to some sleet and ice accretion check out this pics from my balcony.
. It would be REALLY cool if you could show them on air. For some reason i’m always on the rain snow line. We picked up about 2-3″ of snow.

Namaste to my favorite weather team!
I thought you might enjoy these. I had the day off, and it was the
“Perfect Storm” for a snowman, so I made my first snowman in probably
over 10 years (2nd in probably 40 years!). I guess it is one of my
ways of staying young-at-heart as I close in on 51 later this month!
I really enjoy the HD weather, it is on Comcast channel 710 for those
of us who are former Adelphia customers being served from the
Londonderry cable head.
Before the “fun”, had to clear the driveway…
It’s been wild and woolly mammath-like here. Rain then wet snow then heavy rain then sleet, then sleet and snow then briefly all snow and now sleet in Marblehead. Total frozen accum about 2.5 inches as of a short time ago.. I recorded 1.41 inches rain and melted frozen @ 7 25 which I submitted to CoCoRaHS.. Very juicy and very windy system. The temp 31.1 F winds to moderate gale. for a couple hours early this morn winds frequently gusted to the vicinity of 50 mph.
Great work Matt, the graphics for snow accum is a little confusing – 3D?
The light snow this afternoon amounted to an additional 0.3″. While we had some sun for a while around 2pm, the clouds have filled back in. Still lots of snow on the trees; it looks really nice out. Tough little storm to track…seems like an active week ahead too!

The barometer is down to 28.71″ (972 mb) in Bar Harbor ME. When is the last time our barometer read this low? I am not sure, but will do some research. The snow is raging in the hills of Western Maine, Northern New Hampshire, and the spine of The Green Mountains in Vermont. This image from Bretton Woods NH this afternoon., one of two ski area open in New England. Sunday River is also open. Most ski areas are getting snow, but will likely not open for a week or two.

Rainfall has also been intense with 2.1″ in Cornish, where we a change to snow occurred about 8 PM. As wind increases tonight, the pasting snow will weigh down trees causing power outages.
This storm is a result of a new weather pattern that will keep us on the cold on snowy side of the front for the most part well into December.

The surface map from the National Weather Service shows our 978 low in The Gulf of Maine. That low slowly pulls north Saturday. The Saturday story will be snow along the north faces, AND WIND. We do not see this very often.. again from National Weather Service..
That beach image is from MoreBeach.com in Eastham MA. The waves will be crashing, fortunately we have an off shore wind, so beach erosion is minimal.
Over land we are gusting 50+ mph Saturday, not ideal for raking or Christmas Tree shopping. Sunday looks much better, with sunshine and west wind diminishing from 25 to 10 mph. We are looking at more mountain snow Monday, and again Thursday or so. Temperatures will average near to below normal.
We will post updates and storm damage and totals below.
Neil in Franconia NH sent this message at about 9PM and one from Ian at 10 PM

Hi Tim,
Been snowing here in Franconia since about 230p, and we are approaching a good 4″ of heavy wet snow. Still snowing moderately, with a temp right at 31F. Just went outside to shake the snow off the Birches, and could hear trees cracking and crashing in the woods here in the Valley. Power has been flickring off and on for the last several hours, and I am sure we will loose power as soon as the winds pick up. Will checkin with you in the am to let you know what we end up with.
hey….a favor? Can you mention that Cannon is getting smoked too. We need the skiers and boarders to know that. Thanks!
Neil

(Hey Weatherman)
I am at the base of Stowe (Mount Mansfield) and contrary to your predictions, it has been transitioning back and forth from a rain to a mix for hours and still shows no sign of switching entirely to full snow soon. The temperature is somewhere in the mid-30’s. (Ian)
As a skier, you can imagine this meteorologist’s excitement when I got the opportunity to meet and interview FOUR Olympians – Ross Powers (2002 Olympic gold medalist in the half-pipe and two time Olympian), Donna Weinbrecht (Olympic gold medalist in the mogul skiing event in 1992), Fuzz Feddersen (Olympic aerial skier extraordinaire who now showcases that talent as The Flying Ace All-Stars aerobatics extravaganza), and the one and only Ski Hall of Famer Tommy Moe (a double Olympic medal winner, downhill gold and Super G silver at Lillehammer, Norway, 1994)! What an amazing experience to meet these four friendly, warm, down-to-earth yet out-of-this-world talented athletes – I had to share it with you! You can meet them this weekend at the Expo – find out more Expo details by clicking here.

New England has been on the warm side of the front, so to speak, for the better part of a month now. This view from the MountWashington.org web cam today, Tuesday November 17, 2009 shows a barren brown Alpine Landscape, no snow in sight here at our tallest mountain range.

Not only did Extra-Tropical Storm Ida soak us with a daily November Record of record 5,03″ in Portland ME, we also experienced record warmth. On the summit of Mt.Washington we hit 47^ Saturday the 14th, and 48^ Sunday the 15th, along with 2″+ Rainfall that was it for any old (October snow) that may have been left around The Presidential Range.
Atmospheric Steering currents have shifted to a ridge in the eastern United States with warmer High Pressure in southeastern Canada, and the northeastern United States. The cold is in Alaska and Northern Canada, Fairbanks AK has been sub-zero for days. The trough is in the North Pacific with Powerhouse Storms slamming the west coast of North America, Newport OR gusted to 98 mph Monday November 16. As for Where’s the Snow? How about 83″ in seven days..

Whistler Blackcomb British Columbia, In the coastal mountain range of southwestern Canada.. Where the 2010 Winter Olympics mountain events begin here on February 12th. Will there be enough snow? We are certainly off to a good start. Snowfall at Whistler Blackcomb is 83″ in the last seven days…..
Friday November 20, 2009 update from from Whistler Blackcomb..
Now up to 123″ last Seven days.. More than 180″ this month… The most November snow on record.. with plenty more before December.. Ian Robertson took this photo at WB Thursday November 19th.

..another Friday update, we have to wonder if Ida played a role in record flooding in Old Egland today.
back to previous write up (still looks about right, though more optimistic for mountain snow here by Friday, if not sooner)
, with snow forecast for the next few days.. needless to say Avalanche Danger is Extreme. The same is true at Stevens Pass Oregon (top) and Mount Hood Oregon (bottom)
.

.
Meanwhile here in New England, we are cold enough to make snow tonight, but more warmth is forecast into next week. So we are better off checking out the Boston Globe Ski and Snowboard Expo this weekend, than trying to go skiing. Sunday River is open, Killington & Brettonwoods are likely to reopen. See snow reports form around the globe at snocountry.com.

The weather pattern is forecast to drive much colder air across Canada next week, arriving in New England on the backside of a mostly rain storm near or shortly after Thanksgiving. So much for my first lift ride at Stowe Saturday (I am hiking with my skies).

The forecast from Tuesday looked promising for snow in parts of New England, with storm force wind over the Ocean. We got some snow, and some wind, but not to the extent I was forecasting back on Tuesday. The storm ‘Bombed Out’ south of Nova Scotia instead of east of Nantucket. Low pressure south of New England Thursday November 5, 2009 was about 1018 millibars (30.1″) is tonight 986 millibars (29.1″) east of Halifax Nova Scotia. That rapid pressure drop over the ocean is what we call ‘Bombogenesis’.
The wind is Halifax Nova Scotia gustied to 70 kilometers per hour (43 mph) today with rain and snow.
We did end up with 5″ of snow in Wellington Maine.

Here at Sunday River Maine, a place I thought was going to get enough snow to open new terrain, got only 1″ of new snow. November continues to be less snowy than October.

But we have the cold. Snow is being made at Ski areas across the region.

This is the view on Mt.Mansfield Vermont Friday, Stowe is planning to open November 21st. Areas open this weekend are Sunday River, Killington, and Bretton Woods.
The ski web site I get my info from, is SnoCountry.com.
Warmer air arrives Sunday, so we may have some fine ‘Spring’ skiing. The next storm arrives as rain here Tuesday Night. Stakes are high for this storm, keep an eye on the (no name) Extra Tropical Storm in the western Gulf of Mexico. That wet system may ride up a cold front to New England mid week, this could mean snow for ski areas by Thursday Morning. We also watch the evolution of Ida, restrengthening in the Northeastern Caribbean this weekend. That too may become entrained in an East Coast storm next week.

Where did this incredible Groundswell come from? A Tropical Storm formed east of Bermuda Last Saturday, and backed toward Bermuda Sunday and Monday. The swell arrived today, helped a bit by our little surprise Nor’Easter on Monday.

The sunshine and mild air today is likely the best weather for until Saturday or Sunday. We may have some left over swell on Wednesday, the sun will shine, with air temps only in the 40s. Rain develops Thursday, changing to snow Thursday Night. Low pressure south of Nantucket Thursday Night will experience ‘bombogenesis’, that is rapid deepening with Hurricane with wind increasing to 50-75 mph south of Maine Friday. The storm is slowly pulling toward Nova Scotia as it intensifies and expands, allowing for banding Rain changing to Snow by Friday Morning. The best bet for plowable snow is from Eastern massachusetts north into New Hampshire and Maine. Sunday River may get a nice powdery snow for skiers to start our weekend. The weekend will be mostly dry with temps rising back into the 50s.

Yes, my Davis Vantage Pro2 (VP2), Weather Instrument Display has a button labeled ‘Forecast’. Clouds were stuck in southern New England Sunday November 1, 2009, but the computer forecast model gave a Monday forecast of dry in Southern New England. So when I pressed the forecast button on DP2, with a readout of “Increasing clouds, precipitation possible with 24 hours” I was intrigued. On weekends I try to only spend an hour here and there watching the weather map. This weekend none of the seven day forecasts had any rain or snow across the board.. that seemed unlikely, but when and where would precipitation come from? Last week it seemed maybe this Wednesday. But the models said no, as a front in the Northern Stream on Tuesday would lag behind good moisture in the Southern Stream. Then last night (Sunday) the wind started puffing up from the Northeast, gusting to 30 mph after midnight.

This took me by surprise.. then sure enough, rain arrived within 24 hours of my VP2 forecast. This is a photo of the Little Nor’Easter that took me by Surprise Monday November 2, 2009. I was out forecasted by my Weather Instruments. Reminds me of the Model Forecast for Warming this Decade (has not really worked out). At least those long range forecasts have more leeway, as the weather is harder to predict for longer time periods, than shorter time.
So what’s next, how much snow on Thursday?

The old saying.. Red Sky at Night.. did not work out well. Sunday snset was beautiful, Monday was wet and windy.

We have new Arctic Cold arriving in Eastern Canada this week. The difference this time, unlike the huge storm last month, the Southern Stream looks to be much more quiet and cut off from the Northern Stream, therefor we see more of a cold air sort of bleeding in behind a Tuesday Cold Front. We in New England are in the cold for Wednesday through Saturday Morning. The wild card appears to be Thursday. A short wave in the Northern Stream will drop into New England and briefly cut off, with an interaction of some Gulf Stream Moisture. This will result in bombogenesis east of Nantucket Thursday into Friday. The possibility is there for an accumulating snow in the Hills of New England during this time. If it can snow in Foxborough on October 18th, we can certainly get snow on November 5th. The air is much colder this time, so the snow has a better chance of being more widespread. We will be getting more serious on this as time approaches.
Even as cold and snow are possible this week, we look west to The Pacific Ocean, where a monster storm is forecast to come ashore in British Columbia at the same time we may be snowing later in the week. That Pacific Storm is forecast by some models to get into the 945 millibar range, a massive destructive storm to be sure (if it verifies). That storm will push southwesterly pacific origin air all the way across the lower 48 United States. This means that we have a dramatic warm up early next week. The next new cold will arrive after that storm gets to the Atlantic around November 12th.
This is the time ski areas really get serious about opening for good (Sunday River has maintained patchy snow enough for Halloween Skiing).

So snow guns turn on this week, and snow in the mountains should be building up this month, especially after November 12.

Low pressure that dropped the first few inches of snow at our ski areas yesterday, Tuesday October 13, 2009, is tonight a major storm near Newfoundland. wind at Saint John’s is gusting to 65 mph. That low has deepened to 966 millibars, or 28.5 inches. Backside wind is pushing the coldest air since last winter to our six state region. A Frost and Freeze Advisory is in effect all the way to south coast. This is likely the final frost advisory of the fall, as the growing season will have ended for most of us by morning. This will be the fifth night in a row of freezing temperatures in New England. Cold enough air that we have the first Ski Resort of the Season to open here in the east.

Sunday River started the lifts on Upper Lock Mountain today, Wednesday October 14, 2009. This photo was sent our way by Darcy Liberty of SundayRiver.com. The plan is to run the lifts through Sunday with tickets selling for $25.

Now we are turning our eyes to a series of storms coming in from the Pacific, including energy entrained from Typhoon Melor that hit Japan last week. During Tuesday the State of California received 5″-15″ of rainfall with winds to 80 mph. Tonight that storm is breaking into pieces with low pressure centers strung out from Florida to British Columbia. Feeding these storms is hot humid air in Texas and cold air covering all of Canada. The powerhouse low over the Canadian Maritime’s creates blocking, keeping a feed of Canadian Cold air flowing into New England. The state of the North Atlantic Oscillation is currently negative, meaning storms are likely passing to our south into next week. This means we are on the cold side of the storms. Negative NAO also means we can see storms miss to the south. A very fast flow aloft is currently running east to west (or Zonal) across the United States. As the energy becomes more enhanced here in the east we will see an upper level trough dig along the Appalachian Mountains. As the trough digs, storms track closer and closer to New England. The gradient between the stalled high pressure in southeast Canada, and the deepening lows passing south of Nantucket mean we get prolonged northeast wind form Thursday into Monday. Combine the new moon high tides and this flow.. we get beach erosion and minor coast flooding at times of high tide. Tides are high late morning to early afternoon Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.. as well as midnight each of these days. Timing of each low is near impossible.. so let us prepare for a four day Nor’easter.. Friday to Monday. Wind will fluctuate from Gale Force up and down. Rain is likely in southern and eastern New England off and on starting Friday. Air is cold enough Friday and Saturday for snow levels as low as 1000′ if the precipitation gets this far inland. It is possible snowfall amounts may exceed 3″ in our southern hills, that could be enough for some tree damage on the fully colorful foliated forest. Air is surely cold enough for snow in our Mountains of the Berkshires and Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, but we may not get the precipitation to fall that far inland. Either way, we are now into ski season, the earliest I can remember in years.

Waterville Valley this morning (courtesy of Jeremy Gasowski)

And so it begins! The first accumulating snow of the season has fallen in the higher elevations of northern New England – with a few flakes even reaching the valley floors! Check out some of the snowfall totals from the National Weather Service office in Burlington, VT. Rain and snow showers have tapered during the midday hours leading to a decent fall afternoon for most of us. The exception is across eastern Maine and the western mountains where a few rain and snow showers will linger into the evening. It will be breezy as well, with a few gusts as high as 35 mph blowing some of those freshly fallen leaves around.

By tomorrow, a huge ridge of high pressure located over central Canada will slowly nudge southeast, bringing fair and cool weather to New England. Partly to mostly sunny skies will be the rule with temperatures running in the 40s north to lower 50s south. The coldest night of the season will unfold on Wednesday night with widespread subfreezing temperatures across the region. Expect hard freezes over the interior and frost all the way to the south coast. Pull those sensitive plants inside and grab an extra blanket (or two)!

The larger scale picture for the end of the week paints quite a bit of uncertainty for the east coast as high pressure over southeast Canada battles with several waves of low pressure along the mid Atlantic coastline. If the Canadian high dominates, most of the weekend will be cool and dry with light winds. If the coastal storm dominates, it will push rain and wind into New England, especially in the south. Right now it looks like the best chance for any rain would be Friday and then again on Sunday, with the possibility of some dry weather on Saturday. But this is a tricky forecast and subject to change!

In the meantime, stay warm over the coming few days and check back with us often as we pin down the details on the potential late week Nor’easter.
